General comments
Tonsillitis heeft in het algemeen een virale verwekker. De meest voorkomende bacteriële verwekkers zijn β-hemolytische streptokokken groep A (S. pyogenes).
Antimicrobiële therapie in principe niet geïndiceerd. Antibiotische behandeling alleen zinvol indien er sprake is ernstig zieke patiënt of een verhoogd risico op complicaties.
